Subee Nation

Welcome to the Subeeeeee nation.

I am an official owner of my very own Subee!!!!

We picked up my new car this past weekend, a Black Pearl (got to love that name) Subaru Impreza 5 door hatchback. It seems we got it just in time, I got to drive it in the horrible unplowed snow covered roads this morning. I can say I was glad I had the car, and it seemed to be much better in the snow even without snow tires.

We used it this weekend to load up to move stuff into our storage space and it really came in handy. Sorry for the short post but I am trying to get out of here before the snow starts again.

RIP oh Faithful Car

Well alas my faithful black car which has been a great girl to me for the past 10 years is passing on (ok more like being traded in). I can’t really complain, I was not once stranded by the side of the road in my 10 years with her. We found out shortly after coming back from St John that the recent leaking coolant problem was more severe than originally though of. So after some thinking we decided that it was time to move on and not spend the money getting it fixed given her age.

So began the painful task of car shopping, which resembled what a root canal feels like I would imagine. So after looking online for a while we started looking at cars. At least online helped us narrow it down to some sort of small wagon type of car. We looked at the Mazda5, one word: minivan so that was nixed. Ended up really liking the Matrix and the Subaru Impreza. I always liked the Matrix, what is not to love when you just love the movie. The Impreza was really nice too, and subaru’s are just great in the snow. Of course then it came to finding the model you wanted with options, et. Good thing is the Subaru is easy when it comes to that since they really only offer 2 packages. The Matrix was another story, way too many options, thing like heavy duty heating, hell this is NE shouldn’t that be standard.

It came down to in part to what version of the car could I get and how long would it take to get it. Ended up getting the Subaru which I am due to pick up in the next day or two. It is a good thing we will have at least one reliable car but at the same time we haven’t had a car payment in years so that will be a change.

As Kathy put it so correctly, at least this is a lot less painful then car shopping

Arrive happy, leave pissed….

Let me begin by saying that later I plan to write a much more pleasant post. Yesterday we arrived home from our trip to St. John and we had an amazing time. It was wonderful, it really was. I can’t wait to write more about it. But what is bothering us right now is that it is 3 pm the following day and we STILL haven’t received our luggage. We had a terrible time at the St. Thomas airport yesterday when we departed.
It was extremely crowded and all of the workers were rude and didn’t appear to know what they were doing. The clerk at the check-in desk kept typing in our last name wrong, and was getting upset at US for not being able to print out our passes. We gave her all of the information she needed! Finally her boss came over and the situation was righted, though without any apology.
The airport was so crowded that there weren’t any seats, so we had to sit on the floor. There were no signs indicating that the food court was under construction, so the only food available was a hot dog cart (bad for us), and a makeshift bar. At this point we at least needed a drink, but the line was 30 minutes long and the bartender had the personality of a wet cat. She basically threw our drinks at us and slammed down the change after we (politely!) ordered.
We were starving but luckily the magazine stand at least had some candy, so I grabbed some peanut m&m’s to eat on the plane.
When we finally boarded our plane after a last-minute gate change, the pilot was informed that the majority of the luggage still was not on the plane yet. Even though he was green-lighted and most of us checked in our luggage 2 hours before the flight!
The result was that we had to wait on the plane for another HOUR, in the 90 degree St. Thomas heat, until the luggage (or most of it) was loaded. Even the pilot was pissed off. Everyone was stressed out because they were going to miss their layovers, most of which would be the last of the evening at the airports after this 4-hour flight.
The heat was oppressive on the plane and they were unable to put the air on or unload passengers. We just about nearly passed out. One baby screamed the entire hour until his face was red==
poor thing but hearing that screaming for an hour was the icing on the cake. To make matters worse, we were informed that we wouldn’t be receiving our customary bag of peanuts on the flight, nor were we able to eat any peanut-containing foods because a passenger noted a severe peanut allergy. So that meant we couldn’t eat those peanut M&Ms and would therefore starve on this 4 hour flight from hell.
Just as we were getting ready to land the pilot was informed that the Philly airport we were landing into was so busy that he was instructed to circle for another 35 minutes. Lovely. As one passenger so eloquently put it “St. Thomas; come happy, leave pissed”.
Many passengers missed their layovers (as another passenger put it “our chances of making it on time were slim to none; slim just left the building 5 minutes ago”.) Luckily, we had a lengthy layover and we were able to make our flight just in time (with a few minutes to spare to finally get some food!).
This flight was remarkably better, and we thought we were in the clear when we landed at 10:30 pm. It wasn’t until we got to baggage and waited until 11pm did we realize our luggage wasn’t coming. Great.
After going to the baggage claim center, they were luckily able to track our luggage and told us it appeared to be coming from the next Philly flight and should arrive at midnight. She also said that they would personally deliver the bags to our home, though it would probably be at 3 or 4 in the morning. We were exhausted but couldn’t sleep a wink because we were waiting for our darn luggage to arrive. It is now 3:20 p.m. and every time we contact the baggage claim office they are giving us a different estimated time of delivery. First it was 8-10 am, then 12-2pm, and now they can’t even seem to contact the delivery place. This is just peachy! For all we know, the luggage hasn’t even left the airport-or it is somewhere in another hemisphere.
So sorry for the bitch session. Things could have gone much worse, so we should count our lucky stars for that. We’ll be prepared to write a much more pleasant post about our trip once this luggage finally does arrive…lets hope at least by midnight tonight (our rum was packed in there, y’know!).

Wow

So we are almost completely done with the whole flooring project. What a strange, long trip it’s been. The house is still in an utter disarray , but we’ve finished the actual flooring–we just need to put trim around the base molding and touch up some paint. It will be nice to have our place back again soon, and not be afraid of tripping over rogue tools or slipping on sawdust in the middle of the night. We’ve also managed to not bite each other’s heads off throughout the process. Wow!

When all the mess is cleaned up and the furniture returned to it’s rightful place (meaning we’ll no longer be sleeping on the floor or the computer and dressers won’t line the hallway), we can finally breathe again.

I can’t believe we’ll be leaving for St. John in about 2 days. It feels like it’s come up so fast and there is so much yet to be done. But I am excited. I hope the weather holds out, I hope everyone who comes has a good time, I just hope everything all works out. I want everything to be perfect all the time but I sure know that isn’t possible.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since Chris and I were first married. It’s kind of surreal to be doing it all over again. But it’s cool, and this time around some of our family will be there (minus mine, waah, but what can ya do??).

This is gonna send the sappiness police out to get me, but I do have to say that I am one lucky gal to be with Chris. He still makes me happy every day.

I wish we could afford to send everyone with us!

We owe you guys some SERIOUS photo updates also.

Hope you all are well, we’ll have plenty to update when we return!

House Camping

I think this describes our current situation- HOUSE CAMPING -, we are camping in our own house which is an adventure in itself. It may be teaching us some great agility feats as we weave in and out of all the various objects lying all around our floor. There is the bed frame pieces scattered across the floor, the box springs in the hallway, the compressor, floor nailer, stacks of wood…..need I say more.

It will be good to finish this flooring up again and pack up our current camping situation and start living in our home again.

Still in flooring land…

But I thought I’d mention that we saw the most beautiful rainbow on the way home from Home Depot (our 2nd visit of the day). I’m so grateful for this rare, beautiful fall weather and I can’t help but feel a sappy sort of hope when I see something like that.
I wish I had a secret agent camera I could whip out for spontaneous photo events like these.

Happy Fall everyone!

A weekend of fun and debauchery

Just a quick update to let you know we are not dead! We are still knee deep in flooring (2 rooms fully done now, one more to go!), but we took some time out this weekend to go to Connecticut for more tattooing and to attend the Renaissance Festival in Hebron, CT.

Chris got more work done on his Nightmare before Christmas leg sleeve and has the scars to prove it. I got a few little sailor sparrows–pics will come after we are done whining about the itchiness and soreness (and yes, that’s from the TATTOOS, not any other sort of debauchery–get yer minds out the gutter!).

This was the second time we’ve attended the Ren Faire in CT and it seems to be getting better. Though it was dreadfully cold and windy, we availed ourselves of some great shows. We saw some jousting, archery, and pirate brawls, along with some hilarious (and naughty!) shows. Some of which included a duet of “singing executioners” called Smee and Blogg, and a couple of dueling cassanovas called, quite adequately, The Duelists (their sword fights always seemed to get centered around sexual innuendo). The naughtiest and most hilarious act by far was the show put on by The Pope and Cardinal in their sing-along show. It would make nuns and monks blush for sure! It was neat to see everyone in character and the costumes were great. There was a ton of stuff to do and some good medieval eats (and thankfully, some traditional stuff. We wouldn’t have been able to eat otherwise as it mostly centered around meat!).

There was plenty for kids to do as well and some great artisan stuff–some of the stuff was your usual “fair” cheapy stuff, but there was a real blacksmith making swords and such on site, and a few talented costume-makers.

All in all I’d say we hadst ourselves a right lovely time. It was a good short break from our flooring weekends. We also got to briefly visit Chris’ parents; his mom berated us for getting tattoos while making us some homemade minestrone soup. I can handle berating if soup is involved…

Hope everyone is well and warm–love to all and more updates and pics to come (we owe you some major pics!)

I can see!

I’ve been wearing contacts–well, sort of, for almost a full week now. There have been a few days when I’ve tried to put them on but have just given up! It feels so weird having your finger place something on your cornea–didn’t our mothers say never put anything close to your eye? But it feels nice to see without putting glasses on–though I keep thinking I forgot them…

But I think these contacts will sure come in handy when snorkeling in St. John…(hmmm…is that a shark or Chris?)

Meanwhile we are still knee deep in bamboo but we hope to show you the finished project soon! love you all!
